10 Discontinued Items That Need to Come Back

A question that almost always elicits an impassioned response is “What product did you like that is no longer available?”

If you don’t believe me, just check out the comments on any post that talks about Taco Bell’s Mexican pizza.

Or a post about raising the little flag at Pancho’s if you want to get the waiter’s attention.

I think we can all think some that is no longer available that we would like to have available again.

Anyway, I loved Red Fusion. It was like a cross between Dr. Pepper and Pop Rouge. It never became a big seller I guess so they discontinued the product.

Remember when products were built to last? Washing machines, dryers, refrigerators and even toasters have lasted a long time a lot of longer than now. Heck, I have a microwave that was built in the 1970’s and is still running today.

So what are you missing? What do you miss a lot that has been discontinued or discontinued? Here are some replies from a Twitter feed on the subject.

Twitter user Angela Belcamino posted the question and with over 800 comments I was sure we would find some great answers in the thread.

ICURUOK responded with the product I never knew existed: pancake batter in a Cheez Whiz type dispenser:

Jeff Sonich responded with something I often hear from a colleague: real sugar sodas.

He needs to run to the nearest Mercado and buy a Mexican Coke!

Jimmy was damn fast with his answer: PDQ

I vaguely remember this instant chocolate milk, and it was the “Free Surprise Inside” that sparked the memory.

Who else remembers Keebler’s “Pizzarias” pizza chips?

Do you remember wine coolers? I’ve been a fan of the Bartles & James brand but there have been a few that have been great, SO MUCH BETTER than those seltzer things they have on the market today.

When I saw this next tweet, my heart sank. Many mornings on our way to school we stopped at the grocery store and I bought an RC Cola and one of these:

The Original Mars Bar! They discontinued these here in the US a few years ago, but I think the Mandel Snickers bar is a reasonable substitute.

When I saw the Mars bar, I remembered one of my childhood favorites: the McDonald’s Hot Apple Pie. I can’t count the number of times I’ve lost the taste in a week because I couldn’t wait for it to cool enough before taking a bite and scalding my tongue!

This next bit of nostalgia also reminded me of the McDonald’s treat:

Remember that candy bar that “cannot be eaten quickly”? It was the Marathon bar, and it was about 10 inches long, and it was advertised as being so long and containing so much caramel that you couldn’t eat it quickly.

When I was a kid I loved buying them because they were taken at face value saw like there’s more in that 10 inch sleeve than in the 5 inch candy bars. In reality, each had about the same amount of candy since the Marathon bar was braided, so there were almost as many holes in the bar as there were candies.

If I remember correctly, one of the commercials for the Marathon Bar featured a slow-talking cowboy.

WAIT A MINUTE!!!!! MCDONALD’S HAS A PIZZA??? How did I miss that?

Okay, I just checked out the McFanDom site and it says McDonald’s started out serving a large pizza in the mid 1980’s, then soon transitioned to a personal pizza, and eventually stopped serving pizza altogether. It seems that the long cooking time (11-15 minutes) didn’t match the company’s desire to serve customers quickly and quickly.

The next brings back memories of high school sports: Gatorgum!

I don’t know how it worked, but when I chewed Gatorgum my salivary glands went into overdrive and I had trouble swallowing all the spit my body was producing. I guess swallowing your own spit helps quench your thirst. ::Shrug::

Okay I said “10” but I found another one of my favorites that got discontinued:

Oreo granola bars! Since I’m not one to read the nutritional information on products, I figured these things were healthy because of the word “cereal”.

Thank you for walking down memory lane with us. Now scroll down to the stores we’re missing here in Acadiana:

Do you remember these 12 shops?
