Oblivion 2013)
Tom Cruise and Joseph Kosinski hooked up once before they made it Top Gun: Maverick and the product was this 2013 film, which failed to make $300 million at the global box office and operated on a budget of $120 million. Arrival (2016)
This is a personal favorite on this list. The Shape of Water (2017)
Here’s an unlikely candidate for a similar film avatar. But Guillermo del Toro’s winner for best picture, The shape of the water, Much revolves around the first contact between a human and an alien and falling in love during the process. To a certain extent, that is also the story of avatar. However, James Cameron addresses it with a higher normality than del Toro, introducing the idea of Jake Sully inhabiting the skin of a Na’vi. The shape of the water doesn’t work that way, but uses the difference in appearance and nature to comment on love and its universality. Sally Hawkins shines as the leading lady.
