15 Country Artists Who Don’t Drink Alcohol

Country music and alcohol simply belong together.

You’ll hear references to it in a lot of songs and you’ll often see artists drinking on stage, but it’s important to remember that many incredibly talented artists in the genre have given up drinking to find clarity and the best version of themselves, before everything collapsed around them.

Of course, finding sobriety is a very difficult path for most people, especially when you work in an industry that glamorizes everything, which makes the feat all the more impressive and admirable.

Does that mean they stop singing about it? Well, not in the case of artists like Chris Janson, Brantley Gilbert, Keith Urban and others, but some may choose to take their music in a different direction.

And lately we’ve seen a few artists announce their sobriety, including Charles Kelly and Turnpike Troubadours frontman Evan Felker. With that said, let’s take a look at country music stars who have either quit drugs and/or alcohol or never started.

BJ Barham from American Aquarium

BJ is very open about his personal struggles with alcohol and his fans know him as someone who likes to share and is open when they are on a similar journey to finding sobriety.

Charlie Muncaster from Muscadine Bloodline

Jo Dee Messina

The famous ’90s country singer quit after checking into rehab in 2004 after opening his eyes at a post-Super Bowl party that year.

Since then she has been sober.

margo price

2020 has been a brutal year for all of us and especially for Margo Price. The social climate took its toll and led to excessive drinking. Eventually she realized that she had to stop for good.

She explains the decision in a feature in GQ.

Josh Turner

Josh is one of those guys who never started drinking. In conversation with CBN, Josh said, “I’ve never had alcohol in my life.”

Turnpike Troubadours frontman Evan Felker

The Turnpike Troubadours frontman found himself in a series of “drunk on stage” incidents before the band’s hiatus in 2020.

However, Turnpike is back and better than ever with a sober Evan Felker (also fiddler Kyle Nix) at the helm, and he’s even rekindled his marriage to his wife Staci and they recently welcomed their second child.

Charles Kelley by Lady A

The Lady A co-frontman has officially begun his journey to sobriety, forcing the group to make the tough decision of canceling their tour last year.

He recently released a song about his journey called “As Far as You Could”.

Tyler Childers

Tyler announced back in 2020 along with the release of his Fiddle album: Long violent history that he had been sober for 6 months at the time of the video and has apparently been sober ever since.

jess daniels

The rising Texas country star is very open about her sobriety journey and recently celebrated his sixth anniversary being completely drug and alcohol free.

Tim McGraw

We all know this transformation. Spinning tires in the stadium parking lot has been McGraw’s new pregame for a while.

Ol’ Tim has come a long way since he came arrested along with Kenny Chesney in New York in 2000.

Brantley Gilbert

He credited Keith Urban with saving his life in terms of his sobriety.

Joe Nichols

Joe has been very open about his struggles with alcohol for over a decade. He started drinking at the age of 12, and in 2008, as he began to see his life begin to slip away, he found the strength to end it.

He went into detail about picking up with drinks on our podcast, Whiskey Riff Raff.

Keith urban

Urban tells his wife, Nicole Kidman, that she saved his life. Around 15 years ago, Urban began to see his personal and professional life slip away from under him, and Nicole was by his side to help him hang it up.

Chris Janson

He stopped drinking when he met his wife, Kelly, and never looked back. In his 2015 song “Holdin’ Her,” he details his journey to meeting his wife.

However, Chris will apparently still be “mixing” a drink for someone else…

Jason Isbell

Jason has been very open about his previous struggles with alcohol and admits putting away the bottle was one of the best decisions he’s ever made.
