2022-2022 NBA ROY betting odds

At ATS, we bring you a full preview of the 2022-2023 NBA season. We’ve already published a preview of each division and conference. In addition, we also prepare you for the award winners of the season. This piece focuses on Rookie of the Year. The Rookie of the Year is awarded the Eddie Gotlieb Trophy. The odds of winning this prize are listed below.
Update mid December
The rookie-of-the-year race has a real front-runner, and the betting lines might not even give Paolo Banchero enough credit. His current price of -500 probably doesn’t really bring into focus the true lack of competition he faces for the award. Benedict Mathurin is still a bench player in Indiana. While he’s been playing admirably so far, he’s still miles behind Banchero. The only player worth a second look at this point is the Pistons’ Jaden Ivey. With Cade Cunningham set to miss the rest of the season and the Pistons already holding the worst record in the league, it seems only a matter of time before they allow Ivey to do whatever he can. Ivey’s +3000 price tag is the only one currently playable on the board.

Best bet for Rookie of the Year
In my view, the best bet for rookie of the year comes down to a two-man race between the two power forwards, who will step in as immediate starters and contributors. The race was turned on its head when second overall winner Chet Holmgren was injured and lost for the season, but it was turned around in a good way. So we have more clarity.
With Holmgren out of the picture I think we have a two man race between the other two players who were named in the top three. Magic’s top pick Paolo Banchero is the clear betting favorite at +200. The Kings’ Keegan Murray next checks in at +450, but he’s a tough bet there. There’s enough established talent in the Kings roster that we can’t assume he’ll be able to fully shine in his rookie campaign. Next we come to Jabari Smith Jr. of the Rockets. Its price of +600 is extremely attractive.
Banchero deserves great recognition and low prices, unattractive prices if we’re being honest. Orlando has more talent on the roster than Houston. I expect him to have a strong rookie year, but maybe not as strong as Parker.
Parker is an instant starter and high-end collaborator on a Rockets team that has plenty of youth on hand, but not the high-end crowd Magic owns. Only Jalen Green should be considered a potential and current contributor like Parker. Parker will be a gem for distance as he is a great shooter who will not be short of opportunities. He can create his own shot from dribbling and will have no trouble posting strong stats from his first game. His aftermath is also quite advanced for his age. He’s also a great defender on the ball who does well when switched to guard and always brings the intensity.
Banchero is probably the rightful favorite to win the prize, but the price differences between these two players are outrageous. Take Parker at +600 to get the nod.
