2022 Presidents Cup Thursday Foursomes pairings

The 14th edition of the Presidents Cup takes place this week with Day 1 four-a-side matches. The captains of both teams announced their pairings on Wednesday. While the Americans are the favorites to retain their title, they’re looking forward to a strong start in the foursome on Day 1. With five of the world’s top 10 on Team USA, there’s no doubt why the Americans are looking to win this week.

In a four-a-side game, two golfers on the same team take turns hitting a ball on each hole. The two decide among themselves who will tee off from the odd and even holes. They take turns until the ball is holed. Finally, the pair with the lowest score wins the match.

Team USA captain Davis Love III has continued with some joint partnerships, while international team captain Trevor Immelman has pursued a very different strategy, picking his top two players himself in the first game.

Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele contest the first match of the day. They go up against former Masters champions Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama in a 4-0-0 record four. Looking at their record, the USA should win the game, which will certainly boost the team’s confidence on the first day. The duo played all matches together at the Presidents Cup 2019 and also won the Zurich Open this year.

However, Immelman has brought his best players together to put up an uphill battle against the heavily favored Americans.

The second match will feature multiple Major winners Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas, who grew up playing junior golf together. They have teamed up against the likes of South Korea’s Sungjae Im and Canada’s Corey Conners.

Her compatriots Tom Kim and KH Lee will experience their first Presidents Cup together. The two rookies meet Cam Young and world No. 7 Collin Morikawa in the third game of the day.

The highlight of the day would be the fourth match, where world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler meets Sam Burns, a good friend and a three-time winner on this year’s PFA Tour. The duo will play against Si Woo Kim and Cameron Davis.

The final match of the day comes between a very strong US partnership between Tony Finau and Fortinet Championship winner Max Homa against rookies Taylor Pendrith and Mito Pereira.
