49 Winchester Crushes cover of Waylon Jennings’ “Waymore’s Blues”

To the delay, great Waylon Jennings.

At a show in Beech Mountain, North Carolina this weekend, 49 Winchester absolutely rocked their sold-out concert at 5,500 feet above sea level, playing to a packed crowd of skiers (and folks like me who can barely stay on rabbit slopes), many of whom shouted along with every word.

Of course, they ran through fan favorites like “Damn Darlin'” and “Russell County Line,” but one of my favorite parts came when they covered Waylon’s classic song “Waymore’s Blues,” which was originally written by Waylon and Curtis Buck and released on Waylon’s 1975 album , dream my dreams

While they were in the studio Waylon actually stormed out (misunderstanding with the producer) and when they came back to try again they failed to capture the magic of that first take.

If you listen closely to the studio version, you can hear Waylon say “one more,” but then the song just ends quickly… that’s because Waylon left.

It’s a song that even Waylon has previously admitted doesn’t make sense in a way, but in a way it does, and these guys certainly lived up to it in my very humble opinion:

They also played a new song that frontman Isaac Gibson I think introduced as “Should’ve Stayed In Tulsa” (or something like that, I can’t remember exactly), so check that one out too:

The band released their fantastic The world belongs to the brave album last year (#2 on our Whiskey Riff Top 40 Country Albums List), and hopefully, if we’re really lucky, there’ll be another one sometime this year.

I also heard they hit the slopes on Sunday and while sadly there is no visuals of that in this recap, here you can feel the electricity in the room and I loved every second of it:

The Southwest Virginia boys have a packed tour schedule They’re already gearing up for this year, and I’d highly recommend you go to a show and see them in some of these smaller, more intimate venues while you still can.
