7 must-see TV shows like The Last of Us

Probably one of the most anticipated HBO series in recent years, The last of us was recently acclaimed by critics and fans of the popular 2013 video game. The show is set in an alternate timeline with the main cast Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey follows a man and a teenager traveling through a post-apocalyptic version of the USA where the least of their worries are the fungus-infected zombies.
The series presents a dark, somber narrative that is sure to appease both fans of the game and attract new fans of the genre. Unfortunately for those of us who love a good binge, HBO Max publishes only one episode per week. Fortunately during The last of us is an exquisite piece of television, it’s not the only nightmare-inducing dystopian drama out there. Here are our picks for some of the best end-of-the-world thrillers to stream while you wait to see what happens alongside Joe and Ellie on their terrifying journeys.

The Walking Dead (2010-2022)
Based on an equally popular series of graphic novels, the Walking Dead (and all of its spin-offs) is probably one of the most popular post-apocalyptic series to ever grace our screens. After a zombie apocalypse, a group of survivors must make their way into a collapsed world where the infected are not the greatest threat.
12 Monkeys (2015 – 2018)
In this Syfy Original Series, the apocalypse occurs after a mysterious group unleashes a deadly virus that is wiping out civilization. Luckily, in the future, a group of scientists figure out time travel and send a man back and task him with saving the world. The show is loosely based on that 1995 Bruce Willis film of the same name.
Z Nation (2014 – 2018)
Another zombie apocalypse classic Z nation takes place a few years after a virus has wiped out civilization and turned everyone into flesh-eating corpses. After a theme similar to that last of usthe series tells the story of a survivor who also happens to be the only human immune to the deadly virus as he tries to find a way to save humanity.
The Rain (2018 – 2020)
The rain is the first Danish-produced Netflix original series and is set several years after deadly rains wiped out most of humanity. This underrated series revolves around a group of young survivors, including a brother-sister duo, as they try to get to the root of the catastrophe.
The 100 (2014 – 2020)
This Emmy-nominated series is set nearly a century after nuclear war decimated the planet and a small fraction of humanity survived by fleeing to multiple space stations. When the space station runs out of life support, 100 juvenile delinquents are sent back to Earth to check if the planet is habitable. While there are no mushroom zombies The 100ththe series follows a group of people trying to survive years after the end of civilization as we know it.
Chernobyl (2019)
Though not exactly apocalyptic (although real life Chernobyl disaster could have been) Chernobyl was created by Craig Mazin, the co-author of The last of us. The Emmy-winning series follows several people involved in the April 1986 disaster, including first responders, politicians and factory workers.
Jericho (2006 – 2008)
Although this CBS series only aired for two seasons, it has garnered a substantial cult following over the years. Set after several nuclear attacks, the series focuses on the residents of the fictional city of Jericho and their attempts to rebuild their lives after the disaster.
