73-Year-Old Texas Grandfather Rolls Up in Truck, Rescues Young Woman While Thrashing Armed Bandit

Why would a 73 year old grandfather of 11 bother a robber who is choking a young woman, beating himself bloody and having his pickup truck taken away from him?

“I have no choice,” Simon Mancilla Sr. said of his attempts to help a woman who was approached outside a North Houston check cashing store earlier this month, KHOU reported.

“Hey man… don’t make a problem,” Mancilla recalled while speaking to the gunman from his truck. The shooter then forced Mancilla out of his pickup truck and Mancilla fought back. He and the robber exchanged punches, with Mancilla being hit in the head by a pistol and eventually falling to the ground.

Despite the efforts of two other good Samaritans who came to the scuffle, the robber managed to get away in Mancilla’s truck — even as one of the Samaritans briefly grabbed his side.

Mancilla never saw the men come to his aid because, as his son said, “his eyes were full of blood, he couldn’t see anyone.”

Mancilla needed several stitches.

Houston police released video of the incident captured on a nearby cellphone.

The gunman had grabbed the young woman who had just left the check cashing shop when Mancilla intervened.

Is crime out of control in America?

Often, especially in places like Texas, there are tales of good guys with guns stopping criminals. But Mancilla is a special kind of do-gooder: a do-gooder without a gun trying to stop a bad guy with a gun.

That’s bravery.

While it cost him his pickup truck and some stitches, at least for now, it at least didn’t cost him his life.

And it’s good that he’s in a state that recognizes the right to self-defense and the honor of defending someone in trouble.

In another state he might have been charged with assaulting the poor little villain.

This upside-down world is causing many people to leave their liberal-run states and move to places like Texas.

Because when they’re attacked by a villain, at least they realize what’s the right thing to do.

And who knows? Perhaps a humble hero like Simon Mancilla is ready to step in and help.
