A 12-year-old boy goes fishing for tuna and instead catches a great white shark

I would say that could be called the catch of a lifetime.

After abc news, 12-year-old Campbell Keenan from Massachusetts was in Fort Lauderdale, Florida for his sister’s hockey tournament when he and his family decided to take a charter boat out deep sea fishing in hopes of catching tuna…

And boy I’d say that was a million times better.

Keenan felt something massive fighting the line, and after a 45-minute fight, he realized he had a great white on his hands.

Campbell told the outlet:

“We realized it was a shark when it was probably about 20 feet away and we had to get it inside. We put something like a buoy on it to keep it from sinking.”

He said once the shark was caught, everyone on the boat was “ecstatic.”

He continued:

“When you pull the bar up, it was like lifting a 50-pound weight. It was so hard to pull up.”

According to Keenan’s mother, Colleen Keenan, the shark was a whopping 11 feet long and weighed between 400 and 700 pounds.

She also discussed the catch with the outlet:

“Campbell did the reeling and then the first mate guided him and told him how to let the rod go down and then pull it up again and reel in as you pull up.

And then I held on to Campbell because he wasn’t wearing his seat belt and the tall white man could have just taken him.”

Campbell said they didn’t bring the shark on board because US regulations govern how great whites are taken out of the water. However, they were able to drag it close enough to the boat for the captain to mark:

“I didn’t get closer than a meter to him. But the Captain came right up there and tagged them.”

The captain of the charter, Capt. Paul Paolucci said this was the third great white he had seen captured since 2003.

He said he made a small puncture hole in the shark and marked it with a six-foot stick.

Paulucci added:

“It was very exciting for everyone involved. And for everyone else, it was their first big white.”
