A call to former bank employees – where are you now?
I didn’t first get to know the subject at university. The invaluable experience Banks imparted to me has served me well over the years.
That’s why I was very sad to read that the store closed, but of course that’s a universal story.
In Glasgow, where we have lived since 1967, I can no longer quietly buy sheet music or CDs, although I would be spoiled for choice if I wanted drums or anything electronic.
My main job at Banks was assembling the daily order for music that wasn’t available in the store’s massive inventory.
This was done by handwritten letters that had to reach the publishers in London by 6 p.m. Supervising it was Miss Banks, my chain-smoking, somewhat sinister but ultimately kind boss. She taught me that clarity and accuracy are key.
But other, less intimidating people were there too. Keith, Bernard, Derek, Doreen, Ray, Ken and Nicholas, where are you now?
