A former Louisiana state senator will go to prison

It came as a shock to many when now-former state senator Karen Carter Peterson decided to quit her job midway through the regular term in April 2022.

News later leaked out that suggested Peterson was being investigated for her actions with her own campaign money and money from donors given to the State Democratic Party. She served as their executive director.

Today was the day Peterson faced a federal judge for sentencing after she was found guilty of stealing approximately $140,000 from her own campaign account and the party’s account.

According to Acadiana Attorney, US District Judge Sarah Vance sentenced Peterson to 22 months in federal prison. She will report to federal prison on March 6 to serve her sentence.

Trying to argue for no jail time and no home surveillance, her attorneys suggested to Judge Vance that the restitution that Peterson will make could perhaps be sent to a program like Gamblers Anonymous. The judge chose that plan, and Peterson still has to pay thousands of dollars in damages.

In a letter to officers, she took the blame for the crimes she committed and explained her extensive gambling problem and the treatment she is receiving for other addictive substances.

Peterson could have been sentenced to up to 20 years in prison.
