aicc president polls: Congress’s central election authority issues notification for AICC president polls

The central electoral authority of Congress released a notice for the AICC presidential election on Thursday, setting the ball rolling for the election of the successor to longest-serving party leader Sonia Gandhi.

In the issued notice, in accordance with the powers conferred on him under Article XVIII of the Constitution of the Indian National Congress, the Chairman of the Central Electoral Board, Madhusudan Mistry, announced the election of the party leader to be held as indicated in the timeline.

According to the announcement, the procedure for submitting nominations will take place from September 24th to 30th.

The date of review of nomination records would be October 1st, while the final date for nominations to be withdrawn would be October 8th.

If there is more than one candidate, the election will take place on October 17th. The votes would be counted and the results announced on October 19th.

“Therefore, I hereby call on the Congress Party delegates to elect the President of the Indian National Congress under Article XVIII,” Mistry said in the statement.

The nomination form will be available at AICC Office, 24 Akbar Road, New Delhi as per the notification.

The race for the post of Congress President intensified on Wednesday when Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot made it clear that he could campaign and Shashi Tharoor met the head of the party’s electoral body to inquire about nomination formalities.

After more than two decades, a competition for the post of party leader is coming up in Congress.

The upcoming election would certainly be historic as the new president would replace Sonia Gandhi, the longest-serving party leader, having been at the helm since 1998, barring the two years between 2017 and 2019 when Rahul Gandhi took over.

The party last saw competition for the post in November 2000. Jitendra Prasada had lost to Sonia Gandhi in 2000 and before that Sitaram Kesri had defeated Sharad Pawar and Rajesh Pilot in 1997.
