Premier League legend Alan Shearer has backed Manchester City to beat Liverpool in the league title race for the third straight season. Shearer, who is the top scorer in Premier League history (260 goals in 442 games), claimed Erling Haaland could tip the scales in City’s favor in the 2022/23 season.
Manchester City have dominated the English top flight for the past five seasons, winning the title four times. The Cityzens only fell short in the 2019/20 season, Liverpool heroically won them to end their 30-year league title drought.
Last season, the two teams fought to the last whistle, which the Cityzens finally won thanks to a one-point advantage. Shearer has predicted another hard-fought fight this season, helping City come out on top once again. Shearer wrote for BBC Sport:
“Even just watching them on the Community Shield and seeing the body language of Jurgen Klopp and his team in this game, you can tell they’re ready for battle again. Last time they were only separated by a point and it will be incredibly close again this season.”
“If I had to choose a winner now, it would be City – something like that – because of Erling Haaland. They won the title last year without him and without using a real centre-forward. Now they have one who could and should score at least 30 goals this season.”
Alan Shearer reveals what sets Liverpool and Manchester City apart from the competition
North London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have added quality to their impressive squads over the summer. However, Shearer is still not convinced that London sides have what it takes to fight for the top two teams in the division.
According to the legend of Newcastle United, Manchester City and Liverpool not only have excellent squads, but also an insatiable hunger for success. Based on this he wrote:
“If I look at the group of teams just below them, Tottenham and Arsenal have both improved a lot but I still don’t think it will be enough for either to claim a challenge.”
“There’s a gap between the top two and the rest, not only because of the quality that we know City and Liverpool have, but also because of their belief and the relentless drive for success that comes from their managers.”
Liverpool begin their Premier League journey on Saturday (6 August) with a trip to Fulham. Manchester City, on the other hand, travel to West Ham United for the Premier League opener on Sunday (7 August).
