Alan Shearer explains why Manchester United superstar is ‘happier’ without Cristiano Ronaldo

Premier League legend Alan Shearer says Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes will be “happier” if Cristiano Ronaldo isn’t playing.

The Portuguese midfielder put in an impressive performance yesterday (19 October) as the Red Devils comfortably defeated Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford. He scored the second goal in a brilliant performance in his side’s 2-0 win in the Premier League.

Fernandes had nine chances against Spurs, the most by a player in a league game this season.

He has now two goals and two assists in 14 games in all competitions for United this season.

Shearer has said Fernandes isn’t playing more freely on the pitch with Ronaldo as he complimented the midfielder on his performance against Spurs. He said (via Manchester Evening News):

“Would I be upset if I said Bruno looks happier in this team without Ronaldo? I’m just looking at his performance tonight and his energy and looking at his leadership and the qualities he’s shown both defensively and offensively and he’s done so much for you in that performance tonight. He deserves this goal.

Ronaldo has only started six games this season and has scored two goals. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has often looked frustrated on the pitch, at times unable to create or convert chances.

The Portugal captain was an unused substitute against Tottenham and was spotted going through the tunnel before the end of the game.

The Red Devils looked like the more likely team to score from the off. However, heroics from Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris ensured the goal-line remained scoreless at half-time.

Manchester United fired on all cylinders, Fred opening the scoring from a deflection before Fernandes scored to seal the win.

After the game, manager Erik ten Hag shared his thoughts on the midfielder’s performance, saying (via

“Bruno scored, eh? I know it will come with him. Sometimes you have appearances where you don’t score but suddenly you found the back of the net. I think for Bruno that’s it.” important that he scored, but he played a great game today.”

Manchester United have now beaten Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham at home this season. They are fifth in the table, eight points behind leaders Arsenal. The Red Devils meet fourth-placed Chelsea, just a point ahead of them, on Sunday (23 October).
