“All the things that held him back last season no longer exist today”

Spanish journalist Guillem Balague has claimed that Lionel Messi is the happiest he’s ever been at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) at the moment.

The Argentine maestro joined Parc des Princes on a free transfer in the summer of 2021 after his contract with Barcelona expired.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or has had a disappointing debut season at Paris Saint-Germain but is clearly enjoying his football this season.

The Argentine superstar has scored eight goals and provided eight assists in 13 games for the French giants in all competitions.

Balague has claimed that Lionel Messi is playing so well because he’s finally happy in the French capital.

The Spanish journalist has insisted Messi thrives when he is offered a sense of freedom and Christophe Galtier has ensured that. Speaking to Le Parisien, as quoted by PSGtalk, Balague said:

“Happier than he’s ever been! Things are going well on the pitch, the team has adapted to him and he has a hand in the game. All the coaches who have coached him since he was 11 say the same thing: Leo must enjoy developing his best football.

“That’s exactly what’s happening today. He feels a certain freedom in what he can do.”

Balague said that Messi is also happy from a spiritual point of view that his family has settled well in Paris, which helps him play his best football on the pitch:

“Apart from his small injury at the moment he feels good, sharp, has made a real preparation for the season. He hasn’t had to live in a hotel for months, recovering from a long Covid-related infection. Antonela (his wife) works, she develops her hair business, the children do well in school. …

“All the things that held him back last season are gone now. He has a free spirit.”

Lionel Messi’s future at PSG remains up in the air

Lionel Messi signed a two-year deal at PSG in the summer of 2021. His contract expires at the end of the season and his future obviously remains open.

However, as reported by PSGtalk, Guillem Balague believes the Argentine is likely to extend his stay at Paris Saint-Germain.

Balague has insisted a return to Barcelona or a move to MLS outfit Inter Miami could also be on the cards, but staying at PSG seems more likely.
