Shannon Brandt, the 41-year-old accused of murdering 18-year-old Cayler Ellingson, was released Tuesday from the Stutsman County Jail in North Dakota, Breitbart News has confirmed.
A prison official told Breitabrt News that Brandt posted $50,000 bail and was released.
As Breitbart News previously reported, citing local news, Brandt told local police he ran over Ellingson with his car.
Valley News Live reported:
Court documents say Shannon Brandt, 41, called 911 at 2:35 a.m. Sunday morning to report that he had struck a pedestrian for threatening him. Brandt told State Radio that the pedestrian was part of a Republican extremist group and that he feared they were “coming to get him.” The pedestrian was identified as 18-year-old Cayler Ellingson on a GoFundMe page.
After visiting the scene of the incident, the deputies went to Brandt’s home in Glenfield, ND, which is about 12 minutes from the scene of the accident. Brandt admitted to having consumed alcohol before the incident and claimed to have hit Ellingson with his car because he was having a political argument with him. Brandt also admitted to deputies that he first left the scene of the accident, then returned to call 911, but left before deputies could arrive.
Court documents say that shortly before the crash, Ellingson called his mother and asked if they knew who Brandt was. She said yes and told her son she was on her way to pick him up. A short time later, court documents say Ellingson called his mother again to say that “he” or “she” was stalking him. After the second call, Ellingson was unavailable.
Brandt was charged with “criminal vehicle murder and leaving the scene of a fatal accident,” Fox News reported.
The killing came just days after President Joe Biden held a “unity” summit aimed at rallying Americans to fight against so-called “MAGA Republicans,” whom Biden described in a speech earlier this month as ” threat” to the country.
