Alliance Party councillor Micky Murray requires hospital treatment following Belfast attack

An Alliance party councilor has been swamped with support after he was attacked in Belfast and required hospital treatment.

Almoral Councilor Micky Murray reported on the incident on Saturday afternoon and confirmed he needed “a few stitches”.

“Thanks for all the messages,” he tweeted.

“I’m fine and I feel very loved. A big thank you to all the staff at Mater Hospital who took really good care of me and provided me with tea.”

A friend of Mr Murray also shared a picture of the councilor in hospital, with the picture showing the facial injuries he had sustained.

Other politicians from across the political spectrum condemned the incident, and Murray’s party leader, Naomi Long, called it “absolutely disgusting.”

“I hope you’re doing well @micky_murray. Sending you lots of love,” she tweeted.

“Absolutely disgusting that these types of attacks are still happening.”

Lagan Valley MLA Sorcha Eastwood added: “Micky, thinking of you. This is absolutely disgusting and makes me so angry. Absolutely disgusting. Sending hugs and love.”

Others also offered their support, including Sinn Fein’s Michelle Gildernew, who said it was “terrible”.

“I wish you a full and speedy recovery,” she added.

SDLP’s Matthew O’Toole wrote: “I just saw that. Take care Micky but like others completely disgusted and angry this happened in 2022. Solidarity.”

The PSNI was contacted for a response.
