Andy Murray withdraws from French Open to focus on fitness for Wimbledon

The 36-year-old has withdrawn ahead of the qualifying draw at Roland Garros but plans to play at Queen’s next month and possibly another Wimbledon warm-up event at Surbiton.
Murray was eliminated in the first round on clay in Monte Carlo, Madrid and Rome before winning the Aix-en-Provence Challenger to secure his first title at any level since 2019.
But the Scot suffered a 6-3, 6-0 loss to old opponent Stan Wawrinka in a Challenger event in Bordeaux last week and has decided to focus on his preparation for Wimbledon.
After the loss to Wawrinka, Murray said: “It’s not so much about that [physical worries]. I have faith that my body will be fine after what I did earlier in the year. I played two consecutive five-hour games and did well physically in those games. There’s no reason why this should necessarily be any different.
“It was just about seeing where my game was. It’s just the right thing to prioritize at this stage in my career. I trust my body now, but I’m aware that my best chances of getting a good run are greater.” will likely happen at Wimbledon.
Murray is the latest big name to withdraw from the French Open after Rafael Nadal and Nick Kyrgios.
