If the story of a wrong-way driver on a divided highway in Louisiana sounds familiar to you, then it should. Why? Because it happens too often.

Recently, similar accidents occurred in both Vermilion Parish and St. Landry Parish when drivers entered split freeways going the wrong way.

In the Vermilion Township Incident in January this year, an 18-year-old student at North Vermilion High School was killed when her vehicle collided head-on with a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction.

Ramsie Baumgardner was killed when a 31-year-old Carencro man was driving north on the south lanes of Highway 167 near Abbeville. Carencro’s driver also died in the accident.

Just before Christmas last year, 4 people were killed when a wrong-way driver collided head-on with a vehicle after navigating northbound I-49 in the south lanes. This accident claimed the life of the wrong-way driver (his BAC was three times the legal limit) and it also claimed the lives of 3 siblings from the municipality of Iberia.

In both of the above scenarios, the drivers of the vehicles going in the wrong direction were drunk.

Please remember that drunk driving is always a bad idea.
