Anthem Veterans Day Memorial In Arizona Illuminates Only Once A Year, On Veterans Day At 11:11 AM

Today is Veterans Day, the one day of the year when we collectively honor, celebrate, and thank all the brave men and women who have served our country. And while their sacrifice warrants more than just one day a year and a handful of Instagram posts, it’s important to remember that freedom doesn’t come for free.

That said, there are tons of veteran memorials across the country, but this one in Anthem, Arizona might just be the coolest of them all.

You know those movies where the planets align every million years and the sun shines perfectly through some kind of ancient contraption that points the way to some hidden treasure or secret eternal life. The Anthem Veterans Memorial in Anthem, Arizona reminds me of that.

At 11:11 am each Veterans Day, the sun shines through the Five Pillar Memorial for exactly one minute, illuminating the Great Seal of the United States.

“The five marble pillars represent the five branches of the US military. They are staggered in size (from 17 feet to 6 feet) and arranged in accordance with the Order of Defense mandated by the United States Army, United States Marine Corps, United States Navy, United States Air Force and the United States Navy submits United States Coast Guard.”

“In addition, the pavers in the Circle of Honor are inscribed with the names of over 750 US service members, symbolizing ‘support’ for the armed forces. The cobblestones are red, the pillars are white, and the sky is blue to represent America’s flag. The circle represents an unbreakable boundary. Jim Martin, resident and chief engineer at Anthem, was responsible for aligning the monument precisely with the sun.”

Pretty damn cool.

Thanks to everyone who served. Anthem Veterans Day Memorial In Arizona Illuminates Only Once A Year, On Veterans Day At 11:11 AM
