The Boston Red Sox did the impossible on Monday – uniting Mets and Yankees fans.
Boston disrupted both New York teams by trading catcher Christian Vazquez to the Houston Astros.
Vazquez reportedly returned to the Red Sox, a pair of prospects from the Astros.
Mets fans wanted to sign Vazquez from the Boston Red Sox
Boston drew the wrath of New York Mets fans with this deal because they wanted Vazquez behind the plate for their team. The catcher has a .282 batting average and a .987 fielding percentage this season. Vazquez, 31, will be a free agent after this season.
After one of their top catch targets was traded, Mets fans turned their attention to another talented backstop. Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras was rumored to be on their radar but would require a bigger return than the Red Sox got for Vazquez.
Yankees fans were also more dissatisfied than usual with the Red Sox on Monday. After watching Vazquez have several big hits in Boston, New York fans got nervous that he could harm them in the playoffs with Houston.
Another American League East player joined Vazquez in Houston when the Orioles traded Trey Mancini to the Astros on Monday afternoon.
Some Yankees fans worried about what the couple would do in Houston. Others were angry with the team for not doing enough despite a very active trading period.
Vazquez didn’t have to travel far to meet his new teammates on Monday night. The Boston Red Sox and Astros shared the field, so he was already in the right building.
Vazquez spent 14 years with the organization that drafted him. He looked like he’d joined the Mets and Yankees fans in their anger at the Boston Red Sox for sending him to the Astros.
