Arsenal 1-1 Sporting (3-5 penalty): Gabriel Martinelli misses on penalties as the Gunners are eliminated from the Europa League

The round of 16 was level after the 2-2 first leg in Lisbon, 90 minutes later it was still level. Granit Xhaka put the Gunners ahead with a first-half goal that night but Pedro Goncalves responded with a stunning strike straight from the Arsenal half.
It went down to a shootout, with seven penalties hitting the net in the shootout. Gabriel Martinelli then stepped in, having saved his attempt and Nuno Santos kept his nerve to send Sporting through to the quarters.
Mikel Arteta named a strong if somewhat rotated side in north London, with Gabriel Jesus making his first start since the World Cup but Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard falling to the bench.
It was a relatively slow start from the Gunners, but they grew into the match and carried on through the night and the tie. Jorginho played a brilliant pass to Martinelli, his attempt was saved by Antonio Adan and Xhaka was there to take the rebound home.
Gabriel Jesus had saved a shot as Arsenal pressed for the second pressure but Sporting were threatened at the break. Marcus Edwards’ goal was blocked by Oleksandr Zinchenko while Francisco Trincao also got close.
The visitors were clearly the better team after the break and were rewarded in spectacular fashion. Right in the Arsenal half, Goncalves looked up, saw Ramsdale off his line and launched a stunning, floating shot that went over the keeper and under the bar.
Arteta turned to Thomas Partey and Bukayo Saka to try and get the job done in regular time but Arsenal continued to struggle for the flow of the game and had to thank Ramsdale for making sure they stayed level when he did scored a save with his face when Edwards was played clean through.
Leandro Trossard had the greatest chance in extra time when an easy pass from Youssef Chermiti turned into a perfect through ball for the Belgian. However, Adan hit the shot big enough and turned it off the post as Sporting survived.
The visitors increasingly attacked everything and everyone and tried to hold on, with Ugarte seeing the second yellow card after a wild tackle against Saka. However, Sporting held on to take it to penalties.
Ramsdale got his hands on at least a couple of the penalties he was subjected to but could not produce enough touch to stop one and Martinelli’s missed penalty proved Arsenal’s finishing touch in Europe this season as Santos sparked wild celebrations distant end.
