Arsenal will start their new season in the Premier League with a trip to Selhurst Park to face Crystal Palace on Friday 6 August. Manager Mikel Arteta will look to open the season with a win while looking to finish in the top four.
Meanwhile, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has spoken highly of Gabriel Jesus. Elsewhere, the former Gunners forward has advised the club to end their pursuit of a Chelsea forward.
With that in mind, here’s a look at the top Arsenal transfer stories of August 5, 2022:
Jamie Carragher praises Gabriel Jesus
Jamie Carragher believes Jesus is a brilliant signing for the Gunners. The Brazilian joined the Emirates from Manchester City this summer and has already felt at home in the starting XI.
Carragher recently said the north London side have strengthened their attacking and left-back position with good players.
“I think Jesus is a brilliant signing, I really do. I think the left-back position probably cost you (Arsenal) to finish in the top four last season. I’m thinking of those games towards the end of the season, Crystal Palace, the last one, I think in Newcastle, I think (Nuno) Tavares played there at left-back back then. He wasn’t up to par,” said Carragher.
“I think those two positions (forward and left-back) have been heavily filled with really, really good players.”
Kevin Campbell advises Arsenal to stop chasing Timo Werner
Kevin Campbell has advised Arsenal to stop chasing Timo Werner and target Leroy Sane or Cody Gakpo instead. The Chelsea striker is likely to leave Stamford Bridge this summer and the Gunners are reportedly keeping a close eye on his situation.
Speaking to Football Insider, Campbell said there was a more urgent need for a wide forward at the Emirates.
“You could say his degree wasn’t great and he lost a lot of confidence. But you know what, whenever he plays, he works hard and expands the playing field. Whether he’s playing as a forward or a winger, he knows how to stretch the pitch,” Campbell said.
“He is a thorn in the side of the opposition. It wouldn’t surprise me if Arsenal were interested in him. But I think they have bigger priorities for those wide forward slots. I would rather switch to a Sane or a Gakpo. They fit the profile better for me.”
26-year-old Sane scored 14 goals and 15 assists in 45 games for Bayern Munich last season in all competitions. Gakpo, 23, has recorded 21 goals and 15 assists in 47 games for PSV Eindhoven.
Alan Hutton tips Bukayo Saka to become the top earner at Emirates
Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Alan Hutton believes Bukayo Saka deserves a raise at the Emirates. The Englishman is expected to sign a new contract with the Gunners in the coming days.
Speaking to Football Insider, Hutton said Saka is one of the club’s most important players at the moment.
“I think he should be (one of the top earners at the club). Look at what he’s been up to since he broke into this team. When Arsenal really struggled, he was the right person to turn to. He broke into the England team at such a young age; he is an England international; this is not an easy task. And he’s still the right person to contact Arsenal at this moment,” said Hutton.
“He’s come through the club, he knows what matters. It can be difficult at Arsenal sometimes but he took it on his shoulders. He’s been through a lot in his career and I think he deserves it, rewards to become.” Therefore. I think he’s definitely a key player this season for Arteta and Arsenal. You want to keep your star players and he’s definitely one of them.
Saka, 20, has two years left on his current contract.
