Arteta’s side appeared stunned from afar after equalizing as Oleksandr Zinchenko gathered players in midfield ahead of the restart as Arsenal attempted to bring the game to their resurgent Portuguese opposition.
Ramsdale then required the attention of Arsenal medical staff in the 72nd minute after receiving a well-placed shot to the face from Marcus Edwards, but the England international was able to continue after spending a few moments on his back.
Neither team was typically able to find a go-ahead goal and the game went into overtime with an aggregate score of 3-3.
A terrible back pass from Sporting put Leandro Trossard on target, only the keeper could be beat, but Adan saved his defensive line and sliced the Belgian’s shot before penetrating behind him and clearing the post.
Adan made another excellent save against a Gabriel Magalhaes header and Manuel Ugarte was sent off with a second yellow for his tackle against Bukayo Saka as the game went to the penalty spot to be decided.
Both teams were perfect from the penalty spot until Adan Gabriel saved Martinelli’s penalty and Nuno Santos struck his to send Sporting into the last eight.
