Asda £1.45 Spider season hack to keep spiders out of your home

People are being warned about thousands of sex-crazed spiders set to invade our homes late next month, as autumn signals the start of spider mating season.

And now that spider season is upon us, people are looking for a way to keep the creepy crawlies out of their homes.

Luckily Jess Steele, heating technology expert at Designer Radiator Specialists Best heatinghas revealed which cheap products are available in supermarkets and what else you can do to keep spiders away from your home in winter.

How to keep spiders out of your home

The product is a simple peppermint oil that can be purchased for just £1.45 at Asda or a few pounds at Amazon.

Jess reveals why this works so well: “Peppermint oil smells strong and spiders are sensitive to it, making it an effective yet inexpensive way to eliminate the fear of creepy crawlies around the house without causing them any harm.”

Due to the mating season, spiders appear near houses much more often in the autumn months, which is why males are often looking for a mate. When the weather cools down, that means they do so indoors as the conditions there are drier than outside.

To reduce the risk of spiders entering a home, Jess recommends mixing the oil with water into a spray and spraying it on the inside of curtains, window sills and in the corners of carpets and using it as a diffuser The most effective way to deter spiders is by soaking items such as cotton swabs and then placing them in areas where the spiders frequent.

Although many believe that spiders come into the house because of the heat, Jess says that’s not the case and explains why those with underfloor heating are less likely to see them: “A big myth about spiders is that they appear in the colder months due to more spiders indoors keep the temperature down.

“Being cold-blooded, they don’t like it when it’s too hot. So you don’t have to assume that they are near radiators, fire or other heat sources in the house.

“For those with extreme anxiety, underfloor heating is a great solution to making your home spider-free as the air close to the floor is uncomfortable for them.”

When is spider mating season?

Spiders usually hatch in early September and are noticeable in homes until around mid-October. After that, they’re less likely to be spotted indoors.

It is known that female spiders stay in one place all their lives, while male spiders are constantly on the move.

During spider mating season, males go looking for females and often find them in houses, which is why you may notice more of them over the next few months.

There are more than 650 different species of spiders in the UK, and although all of them can bite, only 12 can harm humans.

Money, cellar and lace spiders are expected to be seen more frequently in the coming weeks, as are house spiders, one of the UK’s largest spiders.

The males of this species can reach a leg span of up to 10 cm, although this represents the higher end of the scale and their size depends on how much they have eaten.

After mating, the female lays eggs, and the male usually dies.
