“What an Unseasonal Delight” is absolutely brimming with zingers avenue 5 receives.

This recap of Avenue 5 Season 2 Episode 2, “What an Unseasonal Delight” contains spoilers.

You will remember that later avenue 5 Season 2, Episode 1, it’s not going well. The passengers just found out that they are several years away from Earth instead of four weeks. Stocks are running low. Chaos is brewing. Even Billie’s nervous – “You’re mean and your eyes are buzzing,” says Matt brilliantly in proof. And he’s right, as perhaps worst of all, the ship is heading straight for the sun.

Avenue 5 Season 2 Episode 2 Summary

Well, not in the sun, you see, but very close to it, which is almost the same thing, but not quite. Since the ship’s insulation – Ryan’s original suggestion of using giant magnets to repel heat – doesn’t hold much water – moving everyone over the cooler starboard side of the ship could solve the problem.

Assuming the bosses can actually get everyone to move, which is easier said than done. Elena and Charlie are still fighting, at least partly over Ryan. Gary decides not to move until Ryan threatens him with a foam fire extinguisher (“That’s a mistake,” jokes Matt when Ryan reminds him that they fly in the sun and fire extinguishers don’t work.) Mia is pregnant with a baby that Doug thinks it’s his, but it’s probably Mad’s.

Speaking of Mads, he’s lucky (or bad) lucky to be crammed in with Judd, who’s tearful about the potential he won’t survive the sun like he kinda expected. Neither will the eels, which are the ship’s only source of food, because they too cannot tolerate extreme temperatures. Luckily there’s a maintenance tunnel that’s cooler than the rest of the ship, but it only fits the eels and 300 passengers. The idea is to prioritize the elderly, children and other infirm, but that’s not going to happen, is it?

Spoilers: No, it’s not. Chaos reigns outside the tunnel, and the only people who can get inside are those essential to the ship’s survival like Ryan, Billie, and Rav, those deemed “key workers” like Frank, and those who ” crawled under someone’s legs like a worm”. as does Doug, which is just as good since Mia thought closing the doors between them was the ideal time to tell him her baby might not be his. They continue this debate down the length of the tunnel, and those in between relay the answers.

Crucially, Matt, Elena, Karen, and Spike are left outside to barbecue with the others, which is great news, as Matt takes charge and delivers what resembles a motivational — or at least distracting — speech delivered by is tinged with hilarious mania. “Look, there’s a hedgehog outside, what an unusual treat!” he barks, which is apparently where the episode’s title came from. As Avenue 5 neared the danger zone and we were faced with the very real possibility that everyone was going to die, I wasted a thought on how much worse this show would be without them Zach Woods.

But crisis averted. The ship sails past the Sun with no casualties, although some relationships may have been irreparably damaged by the encounter. We have to wait.

Anyway, back on Earth there’s obviously some shenanigans going on. Lucas is suspiciously interested in Lithium, while Iris, so fed up with the media climate, releases the rest of Judd’s funds to buy the 5 Avenue show outright and install Sarah as the new star. She’s popular for reasons Iris doesn’t understand, which means through the show they can begin to capitalize on public sentiment and take control of the narrative – but to what end? Again, we’ll have to wait and see.
