“Let’s Play with Matches” gleefully skewers contemporary politics in an intentionally chaotic and consistently hysterical half-hour.
This recap of Avenue 5 Season 2 Episode 5 “Let’s Play with Matches” contains spoilers.
in the avenue 5 Season 2, Episode 4, the passengers found they had been constantly lied to about…well, everything. Even after the cannibal disaster is resolved – depending on your definition of the word ‘solved’, obviously since he’s still on the crew everyone just accepted him – there’s still the minutiae of a dwindling food supply and a trip home a few more years than originally announced. Chaos erupted immediately, and “Let’s Play with Matches” picks up right in the middle.
Avenue 5 Season 2 Episode 5 Summary
As with all uprisings, the first order of business is to remove the current leadership. Ryan couldn’t be happier with this development as it finally relieves him of responsibilities he shouldn’t have had in the first place, and even Judd gets the idea, realizing it’s for his own safety and it’s essentially his allowed to sit and do nothing.
But what does that mean for those responsible? Well, the passengers think they can organize themselves, aided by an excitable Matt who has to be imagined meddling for his own pleasure (Zach Woods absolutely makes this show.) They form a bunch of different committees and then, predictably, start arguing among themselves about how the committees should be run.
In desperation, Elena and Charles free Ryan – there’s still a lot of weird sexual chemistry between these three – so he can put some order in. He proposes a democratic election for a ship’s president, and many people volunteer as candidates, none of whom are useful or popular. There’s Matt, Frank, Billie, Rav, Nathan the Cannibal, and even Iris, who wants to set up a “benign dictatorship” and runs away based on her frightening competence.
It’s all hysterical, and “Let’s Play with Matches” condenses the entire race into a few chaotic minutes as Ryan tries to support select candidates who might be able – starting with Billie, then Karen, then Isaac – and every hurdle fails. Nobody likes Billie. Nobody likes Karen either. They’re much more perceptive on Nathan, the literal cannibal who runs mostly on cannibalism-based banter and mental health awareness and is actually the front runner to win until Isaac Ryan nominates. Ryan, of course, is the last person Ryan wants for President, but people like what they’re used to.
Meanwhile, on Earth, we meet a small council made up of offspring of today’s overly wealthy tech brothers like Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk, all of whom propose to destroy Avenue 5 for the good of all. So Ryan’s first task as now the ship’s official commander will likely be to dodge a missile heading towards them.
So no pressure.
