Avian flu in the UK: Two workers have tested positive, according to the UKHSA

However, the UK Health Safety Authority (UKHSA) said there was no sign of human contact.

These cases appear to be related to exposure to infected animals at a single UK poultry farm.

None of the workers suffered from symptoms infection are only found at demonstrations.

Both people’s tests are now negative bird fluthe UKHSA said, adding there was no evidence of human-to-human transmission.

The UKHSA said the cases do not change the level of risk to human health, which “remains very low for the general population.”

Professor Susan Hopkins, Senior Medical Advisor at the UKHSA, said: “Current evidence suggests that the avian influenza viruses that we are seeing circulating in birds around the world are not readily transmissible to humans.”

“However, we already know that the virus can spread to humans through close contact with infected birds. That’s why, with screening programs like this, we monitor people who have been exposed to the virus to learn more about that risk.”

“Globally, there is no evidence of human-to-human spread of this strain, but we know viruses are constantly evolving and we remain vigilant for evidence of changing risk to the population.

“It remains important that people avoid touching sick or dead birds and that they follow Defra’s advice on reporting.”
