We extensively discuss the ending of The Banshees of Inisherin movie, which will contain significant spoilers.

The Banshees by Inisherin is the antonym of The Shawshank Redemption. How? Movies rarely deal with the dissolution of friendships without a cinematic ambush. Here, Martin McDonagh removes the movie details and makes the plot simple. Colm Doherty (Brendan Gleeson) don’t want to deal with Pádraic Súilleabháin (Colin Farell) more. Why? He just doesn’t spend time with the man.

The wonderful thing about it The Banshees by Inisherin is that even in the darkest moments you have no idea where it is leading. Director Martin McDonagh’s excellent script takes you to places you don’t expect, even if they’re sort of cosmetic, as Colm cuts off a finger every time Pádraic continues to patch up their friendship. These somber and ominous scenes can be shocking, even mind-blowing, because the film keeps doubling down on the ultimatums the story threatens.

What happened at the end of The Banshees of Inisherin?

At the end of the film, Pádraic’s sister moves to the mainland to take a job at a public library. He then finds his beloved donkey, Jenny, choked on one of Colm’s fingers, which he threw and bounced off the front door. He threatens to burn down Colm’s house the next day. When he arrives, he finds Colm sitting silently in the house. It does not matter; He starts the fire and watches it burn, but takes Colm’s dog with him. Why? Because why did she, the puppy, die for the sins of his former best friend? But the next day he finds Colm on the beach in front of his house, which has been burned to the embers. Pádraic greets him, thanks him for rescuing his dog, apologizes to Jenny and hints that their feud may be over, like the Irish Civil War in 1923.

However, Farrell’s character tells him that if he chooses to stay indoors, there will only be one ending.

What is the message of The Banshees of Inisherin?

The message of the film can be as simple as the definition of bansheewhich does ______________ mean “a female spirit in Gaelic folklore whose appearance or wailing warns a family that one of them is about to die.” If you recall, a character named Mrs. McCormick watches things happen throughout the film, including looking over the duo as they chat on the beach and finding a body in the river. The message of the film is a prediction of death.

But by whom?

What happened to Dominic in Banshees by Inisherin?

The body turned out to be Dominic’s. He was killed towards the end of the film. How? Was he beaten to death by his abusive father, Peadar? The local cop in town? The last time we saw the worried young man he was hanging on the cliffs as Pádraic passed. Did he jump and commit suicide? Though it’s never confirmed, Dominic was kicked out of his home and had nowhere to go. His choices were going back to an abusive father or finding out with suicide. We fear he may have chosen the latter.

Is The Banshees of Inisherin a metaphor?

The Banshees by Inisherin was widely regarded as a metaphor for the Irish Civil War. Even the way masculinity can be toxic. However, I believe there is another metaphor for the film. It’s one about setting personal boundaries and the fragile nature of relationships. Here Colm and Pádraic ignore problematize borders when it comes to healthy, caring relationships. By creating healthy boundaries in friendships, mutual respect can develop expectations that lead to respect for personal space, boundaries, and comfort levels.

While it’s clear that Colm isn’t the most pleasant or understanding man to deal with; Paddy most likely violated this prior to the start of the film, which is reasonable. Why? Considering everyone is stuck on the island together during the war, just like during the Covid-19 pandemic, it may have hurt Colm’s sense of identity and personal space.
