From one female country icon to the next…
With the release of her latest song, and it’s her 77th travel around the sun, Dolly Parton is having quite a day. And of course, despite all her deserved recognition and prestige, many people have bothered to send her birthday wishes.
But the funniest birthday wish of all came from friend and fellow singer Barbara Dorn when she posted an old video of herself dressed from head to toe as Dolly on an old episode of The Barbara Mandrell Show.
Nobody loves a good prank or knockoff like Dolly, and she’s one of the best in the business when it comes to making people laugh. But Barbara wasn’t new to the comedy stage either, having had one of the most popular variety shows with her sisters in the 1980s.
In this sketch, Barbara, donning a shimmering gold dress typical of Dolly Parton and a short, blonde, curly wig, delivers her opening speech from Dolly’s perspective, even hitting the Southern accent, and may I add that the two do look very similar:
“I can’t tell you how proud I am that Barbara asked me to be on this show! I mean, I think Barbara Mandrell is one of the great talents in our business.
She is electric and exciting and of course SO beautiful. And I’m telling you, the tender way she can deliver a ballad, well, it just brings tears to my eyes.
She’s someone I’ve always looked up to. I mean everything I know about music I learned from Barbara Mandrell!”
Around this time, Dolly graces the stage behind Barbara (still in the same outfit) and catches her in the act in the middle of her Dolly performance:
“Oh tell me…”
“Oh hello Dolly!”
Dolly follows suit, mimicking Barbara’s saccharine version of her own voice, before asking her if she hides her sisters in her bra, which of course she’s enlarged to look like Dolly’s famous bosom!
“What do you have in there, your sisters?!”
The crowd absolutely loved the two of them and their little skit and laughed with the ladies.
Barbara finished the sketch and told the crowd they’d be right back with more, but Dolly, always the lady with the last line, said:
“You’ll come back with less!”
Barbara Mandrell and Dolly Parton have had a longstanding friendship over the years, and both have received multiple awards, including Pioneer Awards in the country music industry.
Barbara shared this snap of the two from the ’80s, which embodied their friendship very well, and wished Dolly a happy birthday.
