Barbican fire: Man escapes major fire in apartment block
Video posted on social media shows flames erupting from a third-floor apartment window next to St. Bartholomew’s Hospital at 4 p.m. Thursday.
A man left the building before firefighters arrived and is being treated by crews from the London Ambulance Service.
A London Fire Brigade spokesman said: “Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters are fighting a flat fire at Bartholomew Close in the Barbican.
“Currently, half of a four-room apartment on the third floor of a block of flats is on fire.
“The brigade’s 999 control officers answered more than 35 distress calls.”
Rev. Marcus Walker of nearby St Bart’s Church tweeted: “A fire has broken out right next to St Bart’s. Please pray for the people of Bartholomew Close and for the emergency services who got here in record time.”
He told the Standard: “It’s fortunate nothing has hit the church – we’re turning 900 next week. I had [fire devastated St Mark’s church in Maida Vale] a lot on my mind right now.”
The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
