Baton Rouge – Mississippi River Has Receded from USS Kidd

Although we’ve had a few showers over the past week, most of Louisiana is still in a drought.

According to, over 90% of Louisiana is “abnormally dry” and over 20% of the state is in “moderate drought.”

And reports from Louisiana, Arkansas, and Missouri are coming in of the Mississippi shoreline shrinking away from the banks, as each of those states reports that 100% of their states are at least “abnormally dry.”

Because of the drought conditions in our north, less water is flowing down the Mississippi, and that’s causing a few things.

One problem is that the river is less open to shipping, meaning goods cannot reach their destinations.

Another, more interesting result of the water receding from the shore is that more objects that have spent years in the riverbed are being uncovered.

Laura Telhiard Smith posted pictures and videos from her visit to the Mississippi River shore in Baton Rouge with the hull of the USS Kidd as a backdrop.

Smith posted the photos and video as she snapped a beautiful sunset, with the shores of Port Allen in the foreground.
