BBC TV license refunds worth up to £159 for eligible households

In order to watch or record live TV programs in the UK, regardless of what channel they are on, each household is required by law to have a television license.

However, if you’re not watching or recording live TV or streaming BBC iPlayer, you could be eligible for a refund worth up to £159.

You can request a refund if you no longer need your license before it expires and have at least a full month left because you are not watching or recording live TV.

You might also be eligible for a refund if your license fee expired less than two years ago.

Refunds are typically processed and issued within 21 days of the application being submitted.

However, your refund may be delayed if you need to be contacted for more information.

Refunds will be made by check or BACS transfer directly to your bank account.

The amount you will receive a refund is due is worked out by TV Licensingthe organization that awards television licenses.

Here’s how they calculate the amount you’re owed: “Any refunds due will be calculated in unused months. Your license must still be valid for at least one full month, which you do not need before it expires.

“So you could get a refund between one and 11 months depending on how long you’ve been on your driver’s license.

“You are not entitled to a refund if there is less than one month between the cancellation date and the expiration date.

“If you have not paid for your license in full, the expiration date may be changed to reflect the amount you paid.”
