“Being in the bubble, in that small tight-a** gym made him bigger”

Miami Heat sniper Duncan Robinson didn’t know what to do with Giannis Antetokounmpo in the 2020 NBA bubble. Robinson, 27, is one of the league’s elite snipers, but even with the Heat’s top defense, he’s not known as a defensive threat.

There were many basketball phenomena in the bubble that wowed fans. From the Phoenix Suns’ perfect 8-0 record to TJ Warren’s Indiana Pacers’ All-Star stats, it was a sight to behold. The bubble was something of a fresh start for the league following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Heat was one of the 22 teams that participated in the bubble. It was a historic season for them as a franchise as they returned to the NBA Finals after six years. During their playoff run, Miami faced the Milwaukee Bucks in the second round. The Heat finished their streak in five games, but that didn’t mean the Bucks weren’t a problem.

On Robinson’s podcast The Long Shot, he hilariously shared with former NBA players Richard Jefferson and Channing Frye how Giannis dominated the bladder.

“I don’t know what to do with that.” 🤣Dunc, RJ and Channing don’t have many answers on how to stop Giannis.

“There are certain possessions that I don’t know what to do with,” said Duncan Robinson. “And every year he comes back, just a little more polished. … Something about being in the bubble, in this small — cramped gym — just made him bigger.”

Despite this, Miami was able to reach the NBA finals that year.

Duncan Robinson’s journey to the NBA is like a fairy tale. He was not called up but found a role with the Heat, who were looking for another shooter to complement stars Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo. After a breakthrough in the 2019-20 season, Robinson found a new home in Miami.

Additionally, the 6-foot-7 shooter made history during last year’s offseason when he signed a five-year, $90 million contract. It was the best for an undrafted player.

Duncan Robinson – host of @TheLongshotPod – has agreed to a 5-year, $90 million deal to remain with the Miami Heat, his agent Jason Glushon of @GlushonSM says ESPN. The deal, the largest for a non-draft player to date, also includes an ETO after year four.

Since then, however, its role in the system of heat seems to have diminished. Last season he averaged fewer minutes compared to previous seasons. It was a noticeable adjustment from Heat coach Eric Spoelstra. He favored Max Strus, who is also an undrafted player.

The difference between Robinson and Strus is that Strus can hold his ground defensively. While not an elite defender, Strus can cover his matchup better than Robinson.

Robinson didn’t get a chance to play much in the playoffs. But it shouldn’t be such a big loss for him. Miami might consider trading him given his massive contract, but the Heat aren’t getting much back from him.

It could only be a matter of time before the Heat decide to ship Robinson out of South Beach.
