Bottle smashed over police officer’s head during violent incident in Dungannon

Two police officers were hospitalized after a man hit them over the head with a bottle and threw metal garden furniture at them in Dungannon.

The incident happened around 12.10am on Friday morning and one man was arrested.

It was reported that a man walked away from police while two officers tried to contact him while he was patrolling the area around Ballygawley Road in the town of Co Tyrone.

Officers gave chase and caught up to the man, and while they were trying to arrest him, he threw metal garden furniture at both officers and smashed a glass bottle over one of their heads.

Both officers were taken to the hospital to be treated for their injuries.

The 40-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of a range of offenses including two counts of attempted aggravated assault, two counts of assault and two counts of possession of an offensive weapon. He is currently in police custody.

A PSNI spokesman said: “Attacks on our officers are unacceptable and must not be tolerated simply as ‘part of the job’.

“As a result of this incident, the number of police officers on the ground in the district has been reduced and it is important to note the impact this may have on our ability to perform.

“However, this does not prevent or deter our officers from continuing to work every day to keep people safe.

“Our investigation into this incident is ongoing and I would urge anyone with information to contact the police on number 101 and quote reference number 19 dated 5/8/22.”
