Bree Runway is a superstar in the making

Bree Runway has compared himself to a flamingo among the doves, Freddie Mercury and a Van Gogh painting. While most artists would appear ridiculous under such a swagger, 29-year-old British-Ghanaian pop singer from east London, née Brenda Wireko Mensah, proved on Monday night that her chutzpah is fully justified. Bree Runway is a superstar in the making.

Michelle Obama called it first. The former first lady attended disadvantaged inner-city schools in 2009 and attended Mensah’s secondary school in Islington, which had been rated excellent. Mensah, who performed a gospel song for the occasion, was told, “You’re a star and you must never stop,” by Obama, who then suggested the musician play in the White House one day. The 16-year-old was sure of himself even then, and countered, “Invite me over, then!” That, Runway told the NME a few years later, was the moment she decided to take music seriously.

Since then, it’s been a roller coaster of awards and accolades for the star, who fused hip-hop, RnB and pop to create a string of super-catchy hits about sex, self-worth and femininity, brimming with irreverent lyrics and bombastic choruses worthy of one arena show. And Obama isn’t Mensah’s only A-list fan: Lady Gaga invited her on the Chromatica Remix album, while a collaboration with Missy Elliot came about after fans started asking if the pair were related, and Mensah said they were American rapper mischievously tweeted and told her, “Come pick me up Mom!”.

Last year Runway beat Brit Arlo Parks with a BET award for Best New International Artist and this year was nominated for a Brit in the Rising Star category, while also earning a top spot on the prestigious BBC Sound of 2022 list.

In fact, Monday’s Electric felt too small for the fast-rising Mensah, who paced ahead of the start with her flame-orange hair dipped in front of her initials blazing in a huge spinning circle of gold reminiscent of the Olympic rings into dizzying choreographies that would make Beyoncé proud.
