‘Bridgerton’ Star Jonathan Bailey to Take a ‘Wicked’ Turn

Good news, dear Ozians: Jonathan Bailey will be dancing through life down in the Ozdust Ballroom. That Bridgeton star has joined the eagerly awaited two-parter Evil Movie as Fiyero, the beautifully brainless Winkie prince caught in a love triangle between famous enemies Glinda and Elphaba, played by Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo.

Yesterday, Variety reported that Bailey is in talks to join the films set for release by Universal Pictures in Christmas Day 2024 and 2025. but Evil director Jon M. Chu confirmed the message on social media. “He’s perfect, they’re perfect. They would be a perfect match. Born to be forever…” Chu tweeted, quoting lyrics from “Dancing Through Life,” Fiyero’s big song and dance number from the musical. “I’m too excited to pretend that didn’t happen. We have a Fiyero!!!!” Bailey also confirmed the news in an Instagram post yesterday with the caption “Dancing through” and a green heart.

The Internet went wild when Bailey’s casting was announced. While many Evil fans were Extremely excited that Bailey Fiyero booked Bridgeton Fans were less than pleased overall, concerned about what this could mean for his role as Lord Anthony Bridgerton in the Netflix series and fearing Anthony will follow the same path Regé-Jean Page‘s Duke of Hastings and disappears from the show entirely. But considering that Bridgeton turns the focus of his central love story and that Bailey recently had his moment in the spotlight opposite Simon Ashley In the second season, he probably wouldn’t have been the focus of the coming seasons anyway.

But what does this casting mean for them Evil movies? Chu cleverly targeted two major fan bases – the Arianators and Bridgeton Stans. Provided that Bridgeton Fans will eventually forgive Bailey for the possible minor role he may have in the coming seasons, it’s a smart move for a film that needs to sell twice as many tickets after being split into two parts. Add to that Erivo’s accolades — she’s won a Tony, a Grammy, and been nominated for an Oscar — and it looks like it Evil could turn out to be one of those rare big-budget blockbusters with deserved critical appeal.

Bailey, who is openly gay and will star Matt Bomer‘s love interest in the upcoming Showtime limited series fellow travellers, is a veteran of the British stage. He recently played opposite Taron Edgerton at the West End in play Tail, and won an Olivier Award for his work as Jamie in Stephen Sondheim’s London production Company. And for those still worried about whether Bailey has the whistles to keep up with Grande and Erivo, don’t worry: He’s got that Broadway belt under his belt.
