Brits spend 13 days a YEAR planning their holidays

According to one study, the typical adult spends the equivalent of 13 days a year planning vacations.

A survey of 2,000 vacationers found this time researching, making lists, booking and talking about their trip – with 59 percent agreeing budgeting is a “crucial” step.

On average, their planning to-do list includes 11 different tasks — including sorting currencies, arranging travel insurance, and organizing the activities they want to do.

Other important steps for successful vacation planning are early planning (40 percent) and prior research of the travel destination (30 percent).

For 25 percent, the study commissioned by M&S Bank found the vacation planning process begins months before their break.

And with 53 per cent of holidaymakers preferring to travel outside of the summer period, it’s likely that many of those surveyed are currently planning an off-season break.

Paul Stokes, of travel money and insurance provider M&S Bank, said: “It’s fantastic to see that we are a nation of planners and enjoy spending time planning the perfect holiday, whatever the season.

“Researching ahead of time and budgeting for your vacation are both great ways to improve your money and avoid unnecessary spending.”

“In addition, it is important that vacationers do not delay purchasing travel insurance until they are ready to travel, as they are covered not just for the time they are away, but from the moment it is purchased.”

When planning vacation spending, steps considered “important” include choosing which payment methods to use (47 percent) and creating a spending budget (45 percent).

The decision on how much travel money or currency to take with you (42 percent) is also important.

A quarter (26 percent) buy their currency a week before departure, while 19 percent do so up to the day before departure.

The study found that shopping (19 percent), local cuisine (16 percent), and history tours (15 percent) are the top things respondents want to spend their money on when they travel.

It also found that more than half (53 percent) of vacationers are happy to book a vacation so they can always look forward to one.

Almost six in ten respondents (58 percent) say there is an art to planning a vacation, and of those who agree, 91 percent say they have mastered it.

Reasons for booking a break include exhaustion (30 percent), wanting to spend quality time with loved ones (28 percent), and wanting to see more of the world (27 percent).

And reasons favored by those who prefer such off-season getaways include that they’re “often cheaper” (35 percent), destinations are “less frequented” (32 percent), and “great deals” are usually available ( 30 percent). ).

Paul Stokes added: “With many buying their currency a week before their holiday, for many it’s an added time-saving convenience to collect currency at the same time as they do their last Christmas shopping.

“While many places accept card payments, it’s always wise to also carry some cash for things like taxis, tips, and even a coffee or ice cream while enjoying all the activities on offer.”
