Café Bowes receives VisitEngland award for food and drink

Café Bowes, located in the iconic Bowes Museum, received the coveted Quality Food & Drink Award following its assessment under the Visitor Attraction Quality Scheme, which recognizes excellence in visitor attractions.

It is the ninth year the program has run and the cafe at Barnard Castle is the only attraction in the county to have received the food and drink award.

The reviewer praised the museum’s comfortable dining experience and atmosphere, noting that the custom-made window seats provide an element of luxury.

The VisitEngland judge said the choice of food was excellent and served in a timely manner and to a high standard, with hot aromatic coffee, very fresh scones, delicious cottage pie with a generous portion of extremely tender beef, moist and tasty cakes and so on Offerings at Café Bowes matched the splendor of the Bowes Museum building.

David Nicholls, corporate director at Bowes Museum, said: “We are delighted that Café Bowes has been recognized by VisitEngland for its fantastic food and drink quality.

“We have a great catering team who are passionate about what they do and our chefs work with amazing quality produce from many local suppliers.

“The seasonality and origin of the menu is very important to us.”



At TripadvisorCafé Bowes is also highly praised with a current rating of 4/5 from 369 reviews.

One visitor said: “The quality of the food and service is second to none. There is a good selection of food for everyone, including vegans.

“We had a light lunch of delicious, spicy parsnip soup served with a warm roll and butter, but there were also lots of filling meals as well as cakes, sandwiches and afternoon tea. Would definitely recommend. If you don’t want to, you don’t have to pay anything to enter the museum, entry to the café is free.”

Another commented: “Lovely cafe in Bowes Museum. We enjoyed drinks and ice cream during our visit. Friendly staff. Good selection of cakes with gluten free options.”

Café Bowes is open from 10am to 5pm, with last orders taken at 4.20pm. Entry to Café Bowes is free.
