Case against ex-Northern Ireland footballer McCourt involves a ‘substantial number of witnesses’, court hears

The case against former Northern Ireland international Paddy McCourt “involves a significant number of witnesses,” according to a court.

The Prosecutor’s Counsel spoke at Londonderry Magistrates’ Court in Londonderry today.

McCourt, who denies a single charge of intentionally sexually touching a woman without her consent, is believed to have committed the offense on January 30 at a bar in central Derry.

District Judge Barney McElholm said the defendant’s controversial case, who lives at Wheatfield Court in Muff, Co Donegal, will in all likelihood involve a full-day hearing, and he said multiple dates were available in November, December and next January.

Defense attorney Eoghan Devlin told the court it was likely that there would be a request for abuse of procedure as well as a request for hearsay.

“In our view, there is an ongoing breach by the PPS of its obligations that will constitute additional abuse of the process application,” he said.

The defense attorney said the only prosecution witnesses he could agree with regarding their statements are the interviewing officers.

“The other officers are needed,” he added.

The tentative contest date was set as December 22nd with a review date of November 3rd.
