After last week’s excitement, this episode slows things down and serves as a fun setup for the next arc.
We are rounding up the Crunchyroll anime series Chainsaw Man Season 1 Episode 5 “Gun Devil” that contains spoilers.
It’s safe to say that while this episode isn’t as exciting as last week’s encounter Bat Devil (voiced by Kenichiro Matsuda), it’s still an entertaining episode in its own right. This episode seems more focused on advancing the story through character development. We are quickly introduced to several new members of public safety, as well as new devils. Slowly but surely, the story is coming together as we prepare to enter a new arc.
Chainsaw Man Season 1 Episode 5 Summary
This episode picks up right where the last one left off, and Denji is only a few seconds away from reaching his goal. With the enthusiasm of the average teenager, he leans in and takes Makes breast in his hands. She even fakes a moan before one of the pads falls out of her bra, spoiling the mood a bit. Denji still takes the last two squeezes that Power promised him, but something is clearly wrong. Despite getting what he wanted, Denji feels underwhelmed.
During breakfast, Denji seems lethargic. His gloomy mood continues on the way to work and while doing paperwork Makima. Noticing his bad mood, she asks what’s bothering him. Denji admits that after finally getting something he was chasing, it wasn’t as big a deal as he expected. He’s afraid that if he sets new goals, the same thing will happen again and again and he’ll never be truly satisfied.
Makima asks what exactly Denji is referring to. When he admits that he is talking about touching breasts, she suddenly takes his hand. She explains that the better you understand someone, the better it feels to be intimate with them. All the while she entertains her hands and slowly and carefully overloads his senses. It feels very calculated, but at the same time, Denji is too inexperienced to be anything but in love as she moves his hands to her face and then to her mouth.
Denji is completely in awe as Makima puts the piece of resistance down and moves Denji’s hand to her chest. He almost panics, falling from his seat onto the floor, his face flushed with ecstasy. At that moment, Makima bends over him and asks him a favor.
“I want you to hit that gun devil‘ she tells him right away. It appeared in America 13 years earlier, but nobody knows the devil’s exact whereabouts these days. It’s a powerful devil, but Makima believes Denji has the power to kill him. She keeps pushing him, telling Denji he’s special before promising to grant him any wish he wants if he succeeds. Yes, even sex considering how awful this devil is.
As devil attacks increased, weapon purchases increased to combat them. This only leads to more gun violence, leading to fear of guns. Everything came to a head when the Gun Devil showed up and started a major terrorist attack in America.
We look back on a family with two young sons living in the snowy countryside. The parents focus on the younger of the two, who seems to be in bed sick, while the older one searches for a parent to play with. They are too busy with the younger brother and encourage the older brother to go outside and play alone. Suddenly, the younger brother declares his desire to leave and shoots out of bed, much to the older brother’s horror.
Despite his efforts to get rid of his younger brother, the two enjoy each other’s company after an impromptu snowball fight. To continue the fun, they agree to play tag and the older brother sends the younger inside to get a glove from the house. The younger brother turns to wave from the porch just before the whole house is blown away after an explosion.
“In just under five minutes, 1.2 million people were killed,” Makima explains over the rubble and destruction. The fear caused by the attack increased the fear of the devils in general, making them all stronger than ever. She asks Denji if he thinks he can beat the Gun Devil, and he replies that he thinks he can if he pulls out all the stops.
However, the first step is to actually locate the Gun Devil. Makima shows Denji a suitcase with parts of the Gun Devil inside. She says if a devil eats a piece, they automatically get stronger no matter what kind of devil they are. At a certain point, once the fragments they have are late enough, the pieces will be attracted to the original body they came from. If they can gather more Gun Devil parts to form a larger collective, they believe they will be able to track down the actual Gun Devil.
In The Field, Aki and Himeno are seen collecting a piece of the Gun Devil from a Fish Devil they just killed. You wonder if the fish stumbled across the piece or if someone specifically gave it to him. We learn from a brief flashback that Aki is actually the older brother whose family used to be blown away.
A team from Public Safety, including Denji, Aki, Might, Himeno, Kobeni and Hirokazu are sent to investigate a hotel. Inside is said to be a devil who may have swallowed a piece of the Gun Devil. Denji wonders if it’s actually the Gun Devil, but Aki says that if it were, the reaction from the piece of Gun Devil he’s carrying would be stronger.
Hirokazu asks if Power and Denji can really be trusted to have their backs given their evil nature. Aki explains that Denji and Power will indeed be at the forefront of annihilation missions. However, if they try to run or switch sides, they will be killed.
Denji thinks it’s unfair that he’s working without a reward because they just fought the Bat Devil. Himeno offers a kiss to anyone who kills the devil in the hotel. Hirokazu protests vehemently for Himeno’s virtue, but Denji says he plans to share his first kiss with someone else anyway. So Himeno ups the ante and says it should be a tongue kiss instead.
With renewed motivation, Denji and Hirokazu storm through the hotel corridors. As the four newcomers engage in playful combat, Aki and Himeno discuss what they think of them and whether they will survive in this realm. Himeno remembers the time she first met Aki, her sixth partner. The flashback and present are accompanied by Himeno pleading with Aki not to die from her.
Chainsaw Man Season 1 Episode 5 ends
The group continues down the hallway, waiting to meet the devil. Eventually they sense you. From one of the room doors, a devil emerges from a head with one hand and one foot sticking out to the side.
The devil lunges at Kobeni, but is stopped in mid-air by Himeno, who clenches her fist. As it levitates, Power slices it in half with a blood sword. She laughs and accuses the devil of levitating in fear of her, but Himeno explains that her power caused this effect. She has a contract with a spirit devil that allows her to use his right hand in exchange for her right eye.
Ali checks her weapon devil piece with the hand and foot devil’s corpse, but it doesn’t respond. They decide to go up one floor to continue searching for their devil.
In the stairwell, Himeno chokes Power with her ghost arm after Power threatens Kobeni. Power cannot fight as it cannot touch the hand or arm. Preferring that they get along, Himeno lets her go and they continue up the stairs.
As they explore the next floor, Hirokazu gets nervous noticing that they appear to be on the same floor they just left. He goes back down the stairs to check his suspicions and ends up right back on the eighth floor. The others watch in shock as they realize they are stuck.
There are quite a few things to note in this episode as we get a lot of character development. We learn more about Aki’s motivations and why he believes his goal is so much stronger than Denji’s. We also see a bit more of Makima and Denji’s dynamic. This episode feels more like a setup or bridge between fights, especially since we had so much action last week battling the Bat Devil.
