Champions League QF draw: Madrid-Chelsea, Man City-Bayern

Defending champions Real Madrid meet Chelsea in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, while Manchester City meet Bayern Munich.

The winner of these two duels meets in the semi-finals, which were also drawn on Friday in Nyon, Switzerland.

Madrid defeated Chelsea in dramatic fashion in last season’s quarter-finals amid a spirited second-leg comeback from the Premier League club.

At a fan event on Thursday, Chelsea boss Graham Potter said his team was aiming to win the “fucking Champions League”.

Following Friday’s draw, Potter told a press conference that he was excited but focused on their next game in the Premier League.

“I said we would try to win the Champions League,” he said. “That also applies to the other seven clubs, I’m pretty sure of that.

“And all the other clubs would say you can lose in the quarter-finals because that’s the nature of the Champions League. We’ll focus on Real Madrid when we get there, but Everton for the moment.”

“The feeling is excited but I’d rather talk about Everton because that’s the game tomorrow and the other things are a long way off.”

Pep Guardiola wants to lead City to their first-ever Champions League title but will need to return to Munich to do so. The Spain coach was Bayern head coach for three years between 2013 and 2016 and faces stiff competition from Julian Nagelsmann’s side, who beat Paris Saint-Germain in the group stage.

This season’s knockout stages see three Italian sides in the quarter-finals for the first time since 2006.

Inter Milan meet Benfica in the quarter-finals, while local rivals AC Milan have been drawn against Serie A leaders Napoli.

The quarter-final first legs will take place from April 11th to 12th and the second legs from April 18th to 19th. The semi-finals will be played on May 9-10 and May 16-17.

This year’s final will take place on June 10th at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul.
