Championship club rejected Chelsea approach to sign 24-year-old midfielder on deadline day: Reports

Chelsea Sander was reportedly keen on loaning Berge from Sheffield United before signing Denis Zakaria from Juventus earlier in the summer.

According to The Star’s James Shield, Berge was on Thomas Tuchel’s radar by the end of the transfer window. However, the Blues failed to persuade the Championship side to loan the midfielder out for the season.

Sheffield United wanted Chelsea to activate the £35m release clause in his contract. Shield added that the Championship side are not ready to loan him out even if Chelsea are willing to sign him on a permanent basis next summer.

Berge also admitted interest from big clubs in the summer amid rumors of interest from Liverpool as well. He did not name a side, but added that not everything reported in the media is true.

He said to TV 2 last week:

“There was a lot of interest, concrete interest, you weighed it up a bit, it had to work out for both the club and for me and it didn’t happen. It’s always nice to sit in a position and know that it’s there was clubs that were very interested.”

The Norwegian added:

“There is nothing negative about clubs of this size being mentioned, but one should not put too much into it. It can be flared up by very little and it doesn’t always have to be right, even if there are big and interesting clubs.” were in the picture. Not everything on the internet is true.”

The 24-year-old has made 77 appearances for Sheffield since joining from KRC Genk in 2020, contributing 11 goals and nine assists.

Chelsea suffered injuries to midfielders

It seemed like Thomas Tuchel had no plans to sign a midfielder in the summer. However, he was forced to relocate along with the club following injuries sustained by Mateo Kovacic and N’Golo Kante.

Chelsea Football Club part ways with Thomas Tuchel.

The former Chelsea manager claimed he has enough players to play in the centre, saying:

“Another midfielder? We have Jorginho, N’Golo Kante, we have Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Conor Gallagher, Mateo Kovacic. You [Kovacic and Kante] are injured, yes, it’s a problem. But they will come back. They haven’t disappeared.”

Tuchel was sacked days after the transfer window closed and was replaced by Graham Potter. The new manager has had a mini pre-season, with games being postponed due to the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

He guided the Blues in the 1-1 draw with Red Bull Salzburg in the UEFA Champions League.
