Charlotte Hornets star a ‘Plan B’ option for the Miami Heat

It’s been a quiet offseason for Miami Heat president Pat Riley. That doesn’t mean the organization isn’t keeping a close eye on potential moves to improve the squad. Over the past few offseasons, the Heat have been one of the most active teams in terms of adding to their roster.

That hasn’t been the same situation this offseason, as Miami appear to be on the verge of bringing back most of their roster from last season. It might not be a bad idea, as the Heat ran an impressive 53-29 and finished with the best record in the Eastern Conference in the last year. Miami is one of Brooklyn Nets forward Kevin Durant’s favorite destinations when he made his trade request.

Though those talks haven’t picked up steam lately, the Heat may be eyeing a possible “backup” plan. According to an article by’s Sean Deveney, Miami is keeping an eye on Charlotte Hornet’s wing Gordon Hayward. The forward could be an interesting addition to the Heat as he is a versatile offensive player when healthy.

“I think one guy they’ll be keeping an eye on is Gordon Hayward,” Deveney wrote. “If you want to give up Tyler Herro before you pay him and you want to move Duncan Robinson, you’d have to make a pick, but these two guys and Omer Yurtseven, that might be enough to get Hayward if the Hornets decide to move to reconfigure.

“It’s a short-term move for Miami, but they have to make their move now. You can play it on the 3 and go big or small on the 4. He’s a guy they’ve been interested in before.”

The Miami Heat are often associated with a variety of players in the trading market. It makes sense since Miami has remained one of the NBA’s most active organizations during the offseason.

After losing in seven games to the Boston Celtics in last year’s Eastern Conference Finals, Miami will be motivated to bounce back this season. With a slew of stars on the market like Kevin Durant and Utah Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell, Miami is active in its desire to add to its roster.

After losing veterans like PJ Tucker to free agency, it remains to be seen if Miami will make any more notable deals before the season begins.
