Chelsea offer update on Mason Mount’s injury as Frank Lampard hopes to ease midfield crisis

Helsea midfielder Mason Mount appears to be making rapid progress in his recovery from injury.
The England international has endured a difficult season at Stamford Bridge and is suffering from an ongoing pelvic injury.
Mount finally underwent surgery for the problem last month, with caretaker manager Frank Lampard confirming at the time he was likely to miss the rest of the season as a result.
That has led many to question whether the academy graduate may have already played his last game for Chelsea without any sign of a contract extension, which expires next summer, despite extensive talks with Todd Boehly.
There are plenty of transfer interests for Mount next season, including from the likes of Liverpool, with Chelsea valuing him at £70m despite this contract situation.
However, he could still stay with the club, with standard sport It is understood that new manager Mauricio Pochettino will ask Chelsea to resume contract negotiations with the 24-year-old, who has been used alongside Reece James, Conor Gallagher and Levi Colwill as the core of the homegrown players the former Spurs manager is building want squad around.
With Chelsea having just three difficult-looking games before the end of a dismal season, Mount is in a race against time to play a part in their tough back-to-back away games against Manchester City and Manchester United closer to home against Newcastle .
However, he appears to be making rapid progress in his recovery from surgery after updating his Instagram with pictures of him on the pitch in training gear in Cobham on Monday night.
“One step closer,” he wrote alongside these encouraging images.
Chelsea also shared these pictures of Mount in Cobham with the caption: “MM19 back on the turf.”
Lampard – who is expected to hand over the helm of coaching to Pochettino in the summer – hopes Mount and fellow Englishman Ben Chilwell still play a role before the end of the season, although James is lagging behind this pair in his recovery from a hamstring injury.
Midfielders N’Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic are also currently absent as their own futures are uncertain. They join Marc Cucurella, Marcus Bettinelli and long-term absentee Armando Broja.
However, Kalidou Koulibaly is likely to return soon after returning to training last week.
