Chelsea Transfer News Roundup Blues contemplating €40 million move for Villarreal forward; Brendan Rodgers insists Wesley Fofana is not for sale, and more

Chelsea secured a 1-0 win over Everton in the Premier League opener at Goodison Park on Saturday. Jorginho scored from the penalty spot and helped coach Thomas Tuchel start the new season with a win.

Meanwhile, the Blues are considering a €40m move for a Villarreal forward. Elsewhere, Brendan Rodgers says Wesley Fofana — a Blues target — is not for sale.

With that in mind, here’s a look at the top Chelsea transfer stories as of August 6, 2022:

Chelsea consider €40m move for Arnaut Danjuma

Chelsea are considering a €40m move for Arnaut Danjuma via The Hard Tackle, according to Fichajes. Tuchel remains in the offensive reinforcements market with the future of some of his current forwards up in the air. Danjuma has emerged as an option to strengthen its front line.

The Dutchman first caught the eye with Bournemouth and secured a move to Villarreal last summer after a nearly flawless season in the Championship. The player has carried his fine form in La Liga and finished last season with 16 goals in 34 games. His exploits have earned him admirers at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues are missing a number nine specialist following the departure of Romelu Lukaku on loan to Inter Milan this summer. Danjuma could fill the void left by the Belgian and the London giants plan to launch an offensive for him soon.

Brendan Rodgers insists Wesley Fofana will not be sold

Brendan Rodgers insists Wesley Fofana and James Maddison will not be sold this summer. The France defender has been a target for Chelsea this summer and Tuchel was in dire need of a new centre-back.

Speaking to the press, Rodgers said both players are assets and will not be fired.

“I have already mentioned, and I repeat, these players are not for sale. These are very important players for us. It’s not about getting rid of anyone and everyone, especially our best assets,” Rodgers said.

Rodgers was blunt when asked if Leicester would accept a big offer for both players.

“That would be up to the club,” Rodgers said.

Nobody wants Chelsea, no. 9 shirt, says Thomas Tuchel

Thomas Tuchel has said no player wants to wear the number 9 shirt at Chelsea. The shirt was last worn by Romelu Lukaku, who has since joined Inter Milan on loan.

Thomas Tuchel on the number 9: “Everyone who has been at the club longer than me says to me, ‘Ah, you know, like he had the nine and he didn’t score and he had the nine and didn’t score either’. So now we have a moment where nobody wants to touch the number nine.” #cfc

Speaking recently, Tuchel revealed that the common belief is that the jersey is cursed.

“It’s cursed, people tell me it’s cursed. It’s not like we’re leaving it open for tactical reasons, for some players in the pipeline who come in and take it naturally. There wasn’t a lot of demand for No. 9 when players sometimes want to change numbers but surprisingly no one wants to touch them,” said Tuchel.

He added:

“Everyone who’s been at the club longer than me says to me, ‘Ah, you know, like he had the nine and didn’t score, and he would have had the nine and he didn’t score either.’ So now we have a moment where no one wants to touch the number 9.”
