Chelsea secured a 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Villa Park in the Premier League on Sunday (16 October). Mason Mount scored a brace to help Graham Potter continue his glorious start in life in west London.
Meanwhile, the Blues will have to face competition from Liverpool to sign a striker from RB Leipzig. Elsewhere, the London giants are planning to sign for a midfielder from Ajax in January.
With that in mind, here’s a look at the top Chelsea transfer stories as of October 16, 2022:
Chelsea must face Liverpool’s competition for Christopher Nkunku
Chelsea could face competition from Liverpool for Christopher Nkunku’s signature, according to The Sun via The Metro.
The French striker has been in action for RB Leipzig this season and has attracted interest from clubs across Europe. The Blues have reportedly agreed personal terms with the player ahead of a potential move next year.
However, the Blues will need to fend off competition from Liverpool to secure Nkunku’s signature. The Red Scouts were reportedly sent to watch the Frenchman as Leipzig played Celtic in the UEFA Champions League last week. The 24-year-old failed to score a goal, but was dangerous in the final third.
Liverpool are unlikely to hijack the deal as Chelsea are in intensive talks with the player’s entourage. However, should Nkunku’s move to Stamford Bridge fall through, the Reds could step in for the player.
Blues planning January move for Edson Alvarez
According to Mediotiempo via Caught Offside, Chelsea plan to join Edson Alvarez in January.
Graham Potter remains on the hunt for a new midfielder and has his sights set on the Mexican. The 24-year-old was a target for the Blues this summer but Ajax refused to let him go. The Premier League giants have signed Denis Zakaria on loan from Juventus.
However, the Switzerland international failed to break Potter’s plans at Stamford Bridge. He has yet to kick a ball for the club and the move is likely to end soon. The London giants are looking for a long-term replacement for N’Golo Kante, who is coming off an injury-plagued season.
Chelsea want Alvarez to take the Frenchman’s place at Stamford Bridge and are ready to make the move for him at the turn of the year.
Trevoh Chalobah opens his preferred position
Trevoh Chalobah has said he prefers to play in defence, although he’s also comfortable in midfield. With the arrival of Kalidou Koulibaly and Wesley Fofana, competition for places in the back at Stamford Bridge is fierce.
Speaking to the club’s website, however, Chalobah said that despite having played in midfield before, he believes his place is in the final third.
“I’ve played in midfield and many positions during my three loan spells (at Ipswich, Huddersfield and Lorient), but I feel like my main position is centre-back. That’s the position I started out in during my academy years as a good one,” said Chalobah.
“Now I just want to play a lot of games because that’s what every player on this team wants to do. It’s about making sure I keep my head down, keep working and take my chances when they come. I want to be a main player on this team and help us win games and win trophies. It’s a big club and we want to win trophies every season.”
Chalobah has made four appearances for the Blues this season.
