Chicken with a Side of Nyquil? FDA Forced to Issue Warning Over Unbelievable TikTok Video

Do not cook chicken with NyQuil.

This warning from the Food and Drug Administration comes after videos on social media platform TikTok went viral about a year ago.

“The challenge sounds silly and unsavory – and it is. But it can also be very unsafe. Boiling a medicine can make it much more concentrated and change its properties in other ways. Even if you don’t eat the chicken, inhaling the drug’s fumes during cooking can cause high levels of the drug to enter your body. It could also injure your lungs,” the FDA said in a warning released Sept. 15.

“Put simply, someone could be taking a dangerously high amount of the cough and cold medicine without even realizing it,” it added.

In the TikTok videos the FDA is referencing, a platform user cooks chicken breasts in NyQuil, an over-the-counter cold and flu medication. One of the videos also shows the chicken being flipped with an electric straightener, NBC News reported.

Although the videos appear to have been made some time ago, they have been extensively re-released in light of the FDA’s new warning.

The videos originally went viral on TikTok, but at least some have reportedly been taken down from the platform, NBC reported.

Is TikTok a Dangerous Social Media Platform?

“A recent social media video challenge encourages people to cook chicken in NyQuil (acetaminophen, dextromethorphan, and doxylamine) or another similar over-the-counter cough and cold remedy, presumably to eat,” the FDA wrote.

Though the videos and pictures appear to have gone viral, it wasn’t clear that people were trying this chicken-and-NyQuil recipe for themselves, the New York Times reported.

“There have been no reports of hospitalizations or deaths linked to NyQuil chicken, a tongue-in-cheek recipe that first surfaced on the infamous 4chan forum in 2017 and also garnered widespread attention in January,” the Times reported.

However, the FDA still felt the need to ensure the weird idea of cooking chicken in NyQuil was warned.

It also warned parents how peer pressure and social media trends can push kids to try weird ideas like these.

“Social media trends and peer pressure can be a dangerous combination for your children and their friends, especially when it comes to drug abuse,” the FDA warned.

“One social media trend that’s capitalizing on peer pressure is online video clips of people abusing non-prescription drugs, encouraging viewers to do the same. These video challenges, often targeted at teens, can harm people — and even cause death,” the FDA continued.

As the New York Times noted, the FDA’s warning has actually helped the videos regain attention on social media.

“And on Tuesday, it was a trending topic on Twitter, with reaction videos circulating on TikTok and links to news articles galore on Facebook,” the Times reported.

But at least there is now a warning from the FDA.
