China party meets to grant Xi Jinping five more years in office

China on Sunday opened a biannual Communist Party conference where leader Xi Jinping is expected to win a third five-year term.

This move breaks recent precedent and would make him arguably the most powerful Chinese politician since Mao Zedong.

As with most political events in China, little information has been released in advance, and the outcome of the congress will only be announced after days of closed sessions.

How much was decided in advance and how much still has to be negotiated in personal talks remains unknown.

More than 2,000 of the party’s 96 million members attend the week-long gathering in the massive Great Hall of the People in central Beijing. China party meets to grant Xi Jinping five more years in office
