China represents “the greatest challenge of our time,” Sunak warns

Ishi Sunak warned that an increasingly authoritarian China poses the “greatest challenge of our time” after speaking with Western allies about how to counter Beijing’s aggression.
The prime minister said it was the “only country with the means and intention to transform the world order” after meeting with leaders at the G7 summit in Hiroshima on Sunday.
He said their approach is about reducing risk, rather than “decoupling” and cutting ties with China as they seek to strengthen supply chains and counter economic constraints.
It is the only country that has the means and the intention to reshape the world order
“China poses the greatest challenge of our time to global security and prosperity. “They are increasingly authoritarian at home and assertive abroad,” Mr Sunak said in a speech before leaving for London.
G7 leaders, which include US President Joe Biden, announced they would set up a new team to root out and combat Russia and China’s use of economic coercion to influence national decisions.
They also discussed concerns about Chinese aggression towards Taiwan.
“There is complete determination and unity within the G7, most notably recognizing the systemic challenge that China poses to the world order,” Mr Sunak told reporters.
“It is the only country that has both the means and the intent to transform the world order.”
He said leaders would work to reduce “vulnerabilities” in supply chains from China and protect their countries from “hostile investments.”
“We have also held talks about ensuring that key technologies relevant to our security do not enter China,” he added.
